William Hill’s Cottage, listed for May 30 auction, appeared on J.H. Taylor’s first map of Geelong in 1854.

Behind its stylised brick facade, the original front section of the house retains strong heritage features, with a more recent rear addition providing an open-plan living space.

There are four bedrooms off a central hallway in the cottage, with timber-lined ceilings.

Two bedrooms have open fireplaces.

Hodges agent Jeff Begg has the 90 Hope Street listing which has housed many significant people of its 160 year history, including three mayors.

Interest in this property has been in the high $500’s.

It last sold in 1990 at $80,000 when sold by the city council.

It appears to have a connection with the work of the important and innovative pioneer Geelong architect John Young, one of the few remaining substantial, high quality brick houses from Geelong West's 1850's era.
