Inflation stirs though underlying inflation stays lows

The latest inflation data was a little stronger than most economists had been expecting.

The Aussie dollar has climbed since 11.30am as a consequence.

Headline CPI grew by 0.7 percent over the quarter, against 0.4 percent over the June period, bringing the annual rate to 1.3 percent from 1 percent.

Core inflation has weakened over the September quarter, with the trimmed mean CPI rising 0.4 percent against the prior 0.5 percent.

It puts the annual rate unchanged at 1.7 percent. The weighted median on a quarterly basis has eased to 0.3 percent from 0.4 percent, with the annual rate steady at 1.3 percent.

Fruit prices pushed inflation higher.

The Aussie has climbed to US77 cents.
