Further Dandenong corridor design details emerge

The Level Crossing Removal Authority's website has been updated once again with a new consultation space as well as new renders of the proposed station rebuilds.

Similarly a series of videos have been uploaded in a 'meet the experts' section of the website with members of the team working on different aspects of the project: acoustics, landscaping, urban design and construction.

Carnegie Station

It appears that Carnegie and Clayton Station are set to receive escalators and lifts and Murrumbeena, Hughesdale and Noble Park will have stairs and lifts. The Carnegie and Murrumbeena diagrams highlight how narrow the corridor is and should expansion from two to four tracks be needed in future, significant property acquisition will be required.

At both Carnegie and Murrumbeena bus stops have been given pride of place right out the front of the station ticket barriers. Both stations have two bus routes running past the station at present - Hughesdale's bus bays are located just beyond the station entrance - the question must be asked: will all these Chadstone-centric bus routes see frequency increases?

The physical infrastructure to enhance intermodal connectivity at Clayton is present however whether bus frequencies are increased thus reducing reliance on car parking in the area remains to be seen.

The bus interchange is less impressive in these versions. I was hoping for interchanges where the bus pulls in directly beneath the station. Looks like this is only the case at Murrumbeena and Carnegie Station - but what about Clayton for Monash Uni?

I was at a talk yesterday with a transport planner who (to my surprise) said that the number of people who transition from busses to trains tends to be very small. He was mentioning it in the context of it making little sense to try to match up bus and train timetables - but in this case you might also argue that it makes no sense to disrupt the bus route or road pattern in some fashion in order to modestly improve the experience for those few making the bus/train transition.

This is currently true, but all the best systems in the world aim for seamless integration. This is something that should happen, even if currently train-bus transfers are low. Improving connections may unlock great gains in patronage.

There are already bus stops at all these stations, new premium facilities nestled under the rail canopy would be world-class. Zurich-style stuff.

Isn't the Dandenong corridor already at capacity, and require additional tracks right now? It seems like a cop-out to me. Although I approve of the removing of rail crossings and this project in general, this seems like another "pass the buck to the next generation" problem that will eventually need to be dealt with.

Don't get me wrong I am happy with this project, but it seems like this is another wasted opportunity. Now is the time to get this project done.

There are no shared paths for bicycles and pedestrians through the station.... This is actually worse for cyclists than the status quo in many cases!

Re future added tracks, at the very least, there should be a dotted line showing where they might go, with the designs taking it/ them into account ! Even planning for just one to allow for expresses and country trains would help. The groovy station design with wrap around would mean chopping them up, or having an extra viaduct not exactly abutting the existing, and there are parks planned and more frighteningly 'development opportunities' exactly where a third rail might go in most of those plans ! But Im sure theres no drawn indication of future expansion because that would frighten the locals even more than already !
