Who does property scribe Ben Wilmot work for?

Matthew KnottDecember 7, 2020

Property writing gun Ben Wilmot has notched up the almost impossible - appearing in both The Australian and The Australian Financial Review.

That’s how it was if you'd checked out the competitive property sections since mid-June.

On The Australian’s website Wilmot’s photo dinkus dominated alongside editor Turi Condon.

But Wilmot's byline was meanwhile also appearing most days in The Fin as well.

It seems The Oz got over-excited about poaching a hack from their rival.

"Ben Wilmot comes to where the action is," their Primespace marketing proclaimed as early as May 25.

The Australian were subsequently using his name and headshot, but he wasn't actually filing himself.

Over recent weeks Wilmot was winding down his AFR output, but still on the Fin’s payroll.

Only today, after 11 years at Fairfax, does he officially have his byline on stories for the national News Ltd broadsheet.

Indeed the new commerical property editor for The Australian even got front page promotional billing today, described as a "sector star", whatever that is.

He does need to change his linkedin through, it shows he's still the AFR deputy.
