A penthouse in the iconic 1940s Sheridan Close building on St Kilda Road is on the market for $1.2 million plus.

Located at 487 St Kilda Road, the property features four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two rooftop decks.

The 200-square-metre property boasts a 1970s refurbishment but has the potential to be renovated.

It is also exclusively serviced by a lift.

Listing agent Fiona Evans of Williams Batters says the listing has been well received.

“People have just been swarming in,” says Evans.

“People have just seen it for so many years and just want to know what is it, but quite a lot of people are interested in it for the renovation,” says Evans.

Designed by architect and former mayor of Melbourne, Sir Bernard Evans, Sheridan Close commenced building in 1949 and was first occupied in 1953.

The late vendors of the penthouse – Hilly and Queenie Cantwell - were only the second owners and purchased the property in 1973.

Queenie and Hilly ran the Stork Hotel, opposite the Queen Victoria market from 1940 to 1969.

“It’s a genuine time warp from 1973,” says Philippe Batters of Williams Batters.

The penthouse will go under the hammer on August 24 through Fiona Evans and Philippe Batters of Williams Batters.

The median unit price in Melbourne is $411,500, a 16.6% change over the past five years, according to RP Data.
