Property owner scam alert: Victorian Fire Services Levy overpayments

Consumer Affairs Victoria has issued a scam alert to property owners over telephone scammers who are calling up and saying that the owner is owed a refund for Fire Services Levy overpayments.

An owner called Consumer Affairs after having received numerous calls, claiming to be a representative of a government department or agency in control of handling the Fire Services Levy.

In this instance, the owner was tole that he was entitled to a $248 refund for overpayment. The scammer then proceeded to ask for personal details and bank account information in order to allow the owner to reclaim the payment.

Monetary transactions are not conducted by the Fire Services Levy Monitor, and this sort of information is never asked for. Do not provide this information.
