Surfing legend Tom Carroll’s Newport property sold under the weekend hammer for $2.2 million, after bidding started at $1.8 million.

It sold to mid NSW north coast buyers.

Champion surfer Tom Carroll listed his hillside Newport property expecting to secure about $2 million at its auction through Lachlan Elder of LJ Hooker Mona Vale.

"If a home could be referred to as "sexy" this would be the one," his marketing says

Carroll bought the Hillside Road property for $350,000 in 1988 when he was competing on the world professional surfing circuit where he won two world surfing titles (1983 and 1984) and three Pipe Masters (1987, 1990 and 1991) in Hawaii.

In 1999 Carroll and his wife Lisa rebuilt the five bedroom, three level home on Sydney's northern beaches with sheets of glass, curved walls, high ceilings and polished timber on its 920-square-metre block.
