The redundant Toorak home of former ANZ CEO Mike Smith and wife Maria has been bought by a member of the property developer Schiavello family for $12 million.

Officially, its been bought by Gabriella Starzynski, granddaughter of the late Stella Schiavello, with the price coming through at less than expected.

It's $3 million less than the botched $15 million sale late last year. The prospective Chinese buyer failed to complete the purchase which prompted the re-listing.

Set in landscaped gardens with mature French lime trees, the five bedroom home comes with pool and a tennis court wrapped in hedging.

It was designed by architect Wayne Gillespie with renovations by Rob Mills.

The Smith's paid $9.75 million for the Hopetoun Avenue home in 2008.

They are now based in South Yarra where they paid $6 million for the Isis penthouse apartment of former Olympic Committee member Kevan Gosper.

They retain the landmark Spray Farm winery on the Bellarine Peninsula.

Mike Smith and his wife, Maria bought historic Spray Farm at Bellarine in 2014.
