Another 3,500 NRAS dwellings in 12 months for Queensland
More than 4,000 affordable properties have been built in Queensland, bringing the total built under the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) to more than 6,000, according to Housing Minister Tim Mander.
Mander said that NRAS is filling a crucial gap in the housing system for those who would otherwise be on a long waiting list for social housing.
The joint state and federal initiative encourages investors to provide properties rented at 80% of the market rate for the area.
“There are plenty of people who aren’t high-needs enough to get into social housing but still struggle to find a home they can afford,” he said.
“NRAS is targeted directly at that demographic and is an important part of the government’s Housing 2020 Strategy."
The Housing 2020 Strategy predicts 12,000 social and affordable dwellings across Queensland - including another 3,500 NRAS dwellings over the next 12 months.
