Academy Award-winning special effects pioneer Jerry Jeffress and wife Melissa are selling their home inland from Cairns.

Jeffress created industry-changing motion control equipment which made the spaceships fly in the original 1980 Star Wars movie.

The Watsonville home, 150 kilometres south-east of Cairns, has been solar powered for the last 25 years, and hasn't gone a day without power.

"It's rural, off the grid and it's very quiet," Jerry says.

The main stone, timber and steel house is serviced by water supplies from the nearby Toy Creek and the Walsh River. There's 150,000 litres of water storage.

The 200 square metre house on 16 hectares has three bedrooms and an upstairs craft studio with balcony.

RE/MAX Cairns agents Ray Murphy and Tony Williamson have a $259,000 price guide.

Jerry has won three Academy Awards and worked on three Star Wars films, three Indiana Jones films, three Star Trek films, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T.
