Number of property investors in Australia rises to 1,895,775: ATO

There were 1,895,775 property investors in Australia in 2011-12, up from 1,811,175 in 2010-11, according to the latest figures from the ATO.

It was 1,751,680 in 2009-10.

The average income loss for all negatively geared property investors in 2011-12 was $10,895.

The report had 1 in 10 of the 12.7 million Australian taxpayers are negatively geared property investors claiming $13.7 billion in total rental losses.

There are 2.71 million rental investment properties, with 812,000 in NSW, followed next by Queensland and Victoria.

The statistics for the 2011–12 income year were sourced from 2012 individual income tax returns processed by 31 October 2013.
