The hotelier Peter De Angelis has sold his Balmain East harbourfront for a record near $9 million.

It was sold through Matthew Hayson of Cobden & Hayson.

It cost $4.8 million in 2003 with its renovation undertaken in 2008.

The Simmons Street maritime villa is a 12 metre wide home on a 686 square metre block of land.

It dates back to 1883. Its refurbishment made much use of materials including Himalayan stone, Red Iron Bark timber and concrete to create its contemporary setting.

It comes with a red iron bark finished boatshed with mechanical slipway for a 30 foot boat, tiered gardens and a mosaic-tiled pool and spa.

The suburb's previous highest sale was $5.675 million of an 1847 sandstone Darling Street villa on a non-waterfront 986 square metres. Darling Villa had a contemporary design incorporating the original sandstone residence undertaken by the Morris family. It had been bought for $2.56 million and the underwent a $1.66 million restoration by Arc Architects.

The street's previous highest sale was $5.5 million in April 2012 when Kenilworth was sold through Danny Cobden of Cobden & Hayson.

The heritage-listed freestanding Victorian Italianate sat on an unusually large 817 square metre block with point blank Harbour Bridge views from its Simmons Street vantage point.
