A Rose Bay apartment that was once owned by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been recently sold for $1.64 million.

Its BradfieldCleary agent Bob Guth said the selling price had "sailed" beyond the vendor reserve price when offered through estate agent Mark Daley.

The Illuka Street top floor Dorchester apartment had last sold in 2007 at $692,000 by Malcolm Turnbull.

It had been bought in 1986 for $125,000 when Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull lived nearby on Beresford Road.

The three bedroom, 133 square metre apartment was home to their housekeeper.

The Art Deco strata apartment has harbour glimpses.

It was in 1983 that Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull bought a home on nearby Beresford Road for $280,000. They sold it in 1989 for $1.4 million when they were off to historic Alster House in Paddington.

They moved to the Point Piper harbourfront in 1994 paying $5,425,000 for Gai Soliel which was bought from Klara Saunders, the widow of the late Westfield Holdings director John Saunders, who in turn had bought the property from Alan Bond in 1979 for $900,000.
