A private island off the coast of the ritzy Connecticut town of Stanford has been listed for sale with price hopes of $18.9 million. The 1.2-hectare island is connected to the mainland US by a bridge and includes a 1,300-square-metre, 11-bedroom main house, guest house, greenhouse and staff quarters to look after it all. The property is being marketed by Houliahan Lawrence estate agents.

Those with deep pockets who would like their own private island but don't want to withstand the metres of snow a New England winter can bring could consider buying closer to home, as Urunga Island off the coast of NSW and Dunk and Beddara islands, slightly storm-damaged but still in tropical far north Queensland, are also up for sale.
