Gryphon House, modelled on a mythical beast, sells in Elwood

Gryphon House, an Elwood home modelled on a mythical beast, has sold for $3.68 million after 76 bids at weekend auction.

It sold for $360,000 over reserve through McGrath St Kilda agents Christine Ford and Josh Stirling.

Designed by architect Simon Thornton around a decade ago, the home has a lion's tail shaped chimney, solar panels resembling eagle feathers and a top floor meditation space in the shape of a griffin's head.

His idea for the design of the home came to him in the middle of the night.

“The original owners were people who were really into their house expressing something about fantasy and imagination,” he said.

He added it to the existing red brick Edwardian.

It now comes with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a music room and two large entertaining decks on its 328 sqm parcel.

Since the design it has been heritage protected by the City of Port Phillip.

A local couple bought the house, hoping their grandchildren would like it.
