Garrick Hawkins might close Mayfield Garden, Oberon over quarry expansion

The Mayfield Garden near Oberon in central west New South Wales, one of the region's most popular tourist attractions, will "most likely" close if a nearby quarry is expanded.

Oberon Earthmoving, which processes organic materials like rock and mulch, has put in a development application to expand its operations. 

The application, which is with the Oberon Council and will then go to a Joint Regional Planning Panel, is seeking to expand operations from two hectares to 15.

Sydney millionaire, Garrick Hawkins, who owns the Mayfield Garden has indicated it may have to close down the 160 acre family project, should the expansion be approved given concerns about increased traffic, dust and visual and noise impacts which would deter tourists from visiting. 

The garden's commercial director Amy Collins said it would be detrimental to the operations. 

"There is going to be an extensive impact on the gardens," Ms Collins said noting it draws thousands of visitors a year.

Oberon Earthmoving manager Zac Rowlandson told the ABC the potential impacts had been "overstated".
