The Dulux chairman Peter Kirby and wife, Erica secured $6.5 million when their Kirribilli, Sydney bolthole went to recent auction.

The price was around $1 million more than initial buyer interest for the three bedroom, two bathroom apartment in the coveted Kirribilli Grande complex.

The Mount Eliza-based couple bought the 180 sqm apartment for $3.2 million in 2001 after the site was developed by the Waterhouse bookmaking family in partnership with Macau casino tycoon Stanley Ho.

Kirby, one of the nation's career industrialists, says he loves the transformative potential of paint, though his apartment appeared mostly white.
