Crone wins PIA's urban design award for work on Orange Regional Museum

Sydney architecture firm Crone has won the award for Delivered Outcome – Small scale for Orange Regional Museum at the Australian Urban Design Awards.

Announced on 25 October by the Planning Institute of Australia, the awards take notice of outstanding urban design projects in Australia.

Orange Regional Museum is Crone’s first civic project, leading the practice into a direction beyond commercial buildings for which it is best known.

“The project blurs the distinction between the architecture and landscape through holistic urban design,” noted the jury.

Crone commenced work on the 1,300 sqm museum after winning a tender responding to the brief to strategically place the building to create a distinctive civic square between the new structures and the existing Orange City Library and Regional Art Gallery.  

The museum houses an exhibition space, visitor information centre, cafe and council office space, while also playing host to a variety of exhibitions.

Seating stairs create an amphitheatre and provide access to the sloping landscaped roof, a defining feature of the design that rises from the existing lawn to provide a public green space and vantage point across the City.
