A North Adelaide home that was once the private residence of Rupert Murdoch's family has been listed for sale.

Offered for the first time in 35 years, the Tynte Street property dates back to 1850 when printer David Gall bought the land, soon after his arrival in South Australia.

A year later he erected a simple two-roomed stone cottage.

In 1866 he had masons Newman and Whitford and Chapman, a carpenter, turn the home into a two storey residence. It was built of Adelaide limestone with brick dressings.

Gall was a founding member of the Chamber of Manufacturers. He was a protectionist, and opposed to free-trade between the colonies. He printed a monthly journal The Comet advocating his beliefs.

The state heritage listed homes form and detailing are evocative of the symmetry of the late Georgian period.

It has five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a sitting room overlooking the swimming pool and terrace.

Bernard Booth at Bernard H Booth Real Estate is marketing the property in conjunction with Fox Real Estate Adelaide agent Candy Bennett.

Their marketing makes a point of highlighting its property pedigree.
