Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate and wife Ruth are selling their vast Gold Coast amalgamation.

The Tates paid $3.3 million in 2015 for the Sorrento riverfront on 4,425 square metres, shortly before securing the vacant 835 square metre neighbouring block for $1.7 million.

Now they're selling the combined 5,200 square metre estate.

The grand home was built in the late 1970s for former Gold Cost mayor Sir Bruce Small.

It features a gourmet kitchen with butlers pantry, a billiards room, private bar, private home office and a sunken separate lounge with stone fireplace.

There are two separate accommodation wings comprising five bedrooms.

It has been listed through Roland Evans, of Canford Property Group in conjunction with Ray White Surfers Paradise agent Matt Gates who says the home is widely regarded as one of the finest family estates within the city boundary.

The couple were previous based at Paradise Waters before selling for $3.5 million in 2016.

Tate has been the mayor since 2012, having been re-elected in 2016 with over 70% of the votes.

It is a potential eight-lot riverfront residential subdivision.
