The Malaysian owners of Queensland's Hayman Island have listed the resort with $300 million hopes.

Hayman Island, in the Whitsunday's is owned by Malaysian-based company Mulpha.

Reports state it is on the market through Queensland real estate agent Dan McVay, of McVay Real Estate.

The 160-room resort needs a rumoured $80 million worth of repairs following destruction caused by Cyclone Debbie late March.

According to reports in The Australian, Hayman Island's financial performance had started to improve before the cyclone. The resort, which employs 1200 staff, will remain closed until the refurbishment is completed.

The Australian reported the billionaire Oatley family, owners of Hamilton Island, could be interested in Hayman because of its infrastructure, and the family is keen to develop another high-end resort similar to its opulent Qualia resort, with a Hamilton Island spokesperson saying Hamilton Island does not comment on rumour or speculation regarding our interests or business strategy.

Mulpha is also looking for a new operator for the island.
