Turner & Townsend’s project manager Scott Sheehan has won the Construction Professional of the Year award for his work at Hummingbird House.

The award from Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) was given away at a function in Melbourne’s RACV Club.

Hummingbird House is Queensland’s only children’s hospice. It has eight beds and provides care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

It is operated by Wesley Mission Queensland, and has been built at Wesley Mission Queensland’s Wheller Gardens site in Chermside, North Brisbane, close to the Chermside’s transport hub, the Clem 7 and the Prince Charles Hospital.

It is a joint effort of the Hummingbird House Foundation and Wesley Mission Queensland.

The facility will deliver a variety of services, such as short-break stay, symptom management, emotional and psychosocial support, end of life care, bereavement support and many activities and therapies.

Project managers for Hummingbird House, Turner & Townsend – led by Scott Sheehan, completed over 900 hours of pro-bono time over a two-year period for the project.

“I’m elated to win this award. Many people and organisations have donated their time to this children’s hospice which is changing the lives of many children and their families,” said Sheehan.

Anooj Oodit, managing director, Australia and New Zealand for Turner & Townsend said Sheehan and his team “worked tirelessly to deliver it on time and within budget”.

“Their in-kind involvement and support from the outset has been second-to-none and has been a crucial factor in attracting other high calibre construction partners and consultants to come on board,” said managing director & co-founder of Hummingbird House Foundation, Paul Quilliam.
