The Point Piper trophy home of luxury car importer Neville Crichton has sold for around $62 million.

It was sold subject to approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board.

The home (waterfront centre) broke the headlines in 2011 after Title Tattle revealed Microsoft boss Bill Gates was set to rent the home during his Sydney sojourn.

Crichton's Tuscan-style residence, Portofino, made headlines in 2011 when it was briefly rented by the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda at $25,000 a week.

It is next to the mega-mansion of Aussie John Symond which is for sale at $100 million plus.

The result puts it in the top two residential house sales nationally, topped by the $70 million record set by the Vaucluse hillside mansion, La Mer that was sold by James and Erica Packer in 2015.

The nearby waterfront mansion Altona ranks as the third highest house sale following its sale late last year for $61.8 million.

The three-level Portofino has six bedrooms, a gym, private jetty and is set on 1500 square metres at the end of Wingadal Place cul-de-sac in a sheltered inlet with gun-barrel Harbour Bridge views.

Crichton built after he bought the property from Bruce Rose and his wife Pam.

He recently joked if a burglar broke into his house “they’d look around and say, ‘you need a bit of help, here’s some money’.”

Crichton engaged Auckland-based designers Swan Railley Clapham to build a new residence on the Point Piper site he bought for $5.9 million from the Rose family in 1994.

The Roses bought in the early 1960s from the Hordern family for 18,000 pounds. The Rose family property held a private helipad licence.

Crichton and his girlfriend Nadi Hasandedic were spotted missing out at a downsizer Darling Point penthouse last year.

They reputedly also made an early offer of more than $20 million for the Finger Wharf penthouse of Russell Crowe at Woolloomooloo.

They are set to get married this year.
