The Wategos Beach, Byron Bay holiday home of businessman Mark Rowsthorn, the chief of transport company McAleese, has finally sold at an undisclosed price.

The asking price had remained steadfast at $8.5 million, despite being on the market for nearly two years.

Rowsthorn saw the neighbouring Byron Bay house selling for $9.5 million last year and knocked back several bids.

He paid $6.2 million for the home in 2006 after it traded for $4.5 million the year earlier.

Set on an elevated 664 square metres, the California bungalow style home has two bedrooms and a two bedroom granny flat.

There have been seven house sales around Wategos this year ranging from $2.4 million to $6.2 million.
