The one-bedroom Darlinghurst apartment of artist Julian Meagher sold for $77,000 over reserve at weekend auction.
A young local couple paid $727,000 for the Royal Court apartment at 19/227 Crown Street.
Selling agent Chris Chung had 17 parties register to bid.
Meagher and his partner Beejal Patel intend to buy in the eastern suburbs, around Redfern.
The Archibald finalist of the past two years paid $345,000 for the one-bedder in 2009.
