The Whale Beach oceanfront retreat of the late soprano Dame Joan Sutherland has been sold, in one of the quickest sales on the pricey northern beaches this year.

Whispers are that $6.9 million was paid for the tightly held Rayner Road home through David Edwards at LJ Hooker Palm Beach

It was 38 years ago that the 1950s home on 3200 sqm sold for $167,000 to Sutherland, whose nickname La Stupenda was bestowed by an audience at Venice's famous La Fenice opera house in 1960 after a performance of Alcina.

Villa Rocca Bella has been little used in recent times by her husband Richard Bonynge, who calls home Montreux in Switzerland.
