An Austinmer property has sold for $3.5 million, setting a record price for the upmarket NSW Illawarra beachside suburb.

The home at 70 Lawrence Hargrave Drive sold to an Illawarra buyer.

McGrath Estate Agents Thirroul agent Trever Molenaar secured the sale for the Thorn family who appreciated the buyer expressed a desire to keep the character of the historic house on its 3878-square-metre site.

The property sold within one week of it going on the market.

It overlooks Little Austi Beach and has panoramic views of the Glastonbury Garden and the ocean.

The block was originally much larger, but the family gave some of their land to Wollongong City Council for what is now the Glastonbury Garden.

The Thorn family owned the brickworks at Woonona before selling the site to the Village Building Company which then developed the 40-hectare residential Edgewood Estate.

The previous highest sale of an Austinmer residential dwelling was $3.295 million in 2005.
