Edmund Barton's Calahla at Balgowlah sold

Calahla, the former rental home of Australia's first Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton, has been sold.

There were $3.3 million hopes for the 1877 Balgowlah home.

The Victorian Rustic Gothic home was built for William Marshall Jackson, a partner of ironmonger Lassetter and Co.

Then known as Calahla, it was leased by Barton in 1888, the year after he was appointed to the NSW Legislative Council.

Barton stayed until 1891 when he stood for election to East Sydney.

The home last traded in 2004 when bought by the Norwegian Seaman's Church for $2.2 million. 

The White Street property name was changed to Whitehall during the ownership of former state MP Doug Darby who bought the property in 1953.

Barton contested the inaugural 1901 federal election as a member of the Protectionist Party.

He served as Prime Minister until 24 September 1903, when he resigned to take up a chair on the High Court. He served on the Court until his death in 1920.
