Plastic surgeon Dr George Muchnicki has sold his St Kilda penthouse he bought because the 1850s building shared his name.

The apartment at 301/125 Fitzroy Street sits atop The George. No sale price has been given.

It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms with its north-facing views from the bay to the city centre over Albert Park Lake. Rooftop title with air rights were included.

Dr Muchnicki bought the 160 square metre fourth floor penthouse in 1993 for $250,000 and around 10 years later bought The George's distinctive tower, which is presently an artist studio and was offered to the buyer separately at $200,000 plus.

Wilson agents Graeme Wilson and Jutta Rubinstein were expecting more than $1.5 million for the penthouse at its 6 December auction.

The 1860s apartment is 200 square metres.

The owners' corporation fees are around $3,000 per quarter.

The George Hotel, on the corner of Fitzroy and Grey streets, survived with the recent vision of the late restaurateur Donlevy Fitzpatrick

There are rooms with high ceilings, polished floorboards and open fireplaces, with its commercial and residential zoning recently utilised as gallery space.

St Kilda's highest-priced apartment over recent months was the garden apartment at 1/32 Burnett Street for $1,015,000.
