The Melbourne property developer Michael Buxton has donated his $26 million contemporary art collection to the University of Melbourne.

The collection of 300 includes the likes of Bill Henson, Howard Arkley, Patricia Piccinini and Rosalie Gascoigne which will be housed in a purpose-built art gallery, the Michael Buxton Centre of Contemporary Art, at the university’s Southbank Campus (formerly the Victorian College of the Arts).

Buxton will fund the build and manage it with his family for 20 years.

The founder and chief executive of MAB Corporation did not go to Melbourne University. He went to RMIT.

The collection began in 1995, with the decision to buy multiple works from a handful of Australian artists.
