A lawned courtyard 202 square metre garden plot, which fronts ordinary Chelsea houses in London, has been sold at Savills International auction for £84,000 (AU$151,000) to an international buyer

"Little bits of London, such as this, are in scarce supply and people want to get their hands on their own little piece of Chelsea," Savills auctioneer Chris Coleman-Smith said.

The 0.05 acre plot of land with sundial, accessed from Sprimont Place, sold for the equivalent of £1.68 million per acre.

It has no planning permission and no right of way, situated in Chelsea, one of Central London’s most affluent and highly sought after residential areas.

"City environments can easily change and so this could be a very long term investment bought with grandchildren and inheritance in mind – who knows what it might be possible to do with it in 20 years time," Chris Coleman-Smith said.

The garden was sold only eight months ago for £53,000 (AU$94,000).

Meanwhile Alan Titchmarsh’s departure as host of the BBC coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show continues to intrigue.

He has revealed he stepped down hurt, because his role as lead presenter was given to fellow gardener and Daily Mail columnist Monty Don.

Titchmarsh was the unofficial face of Chelsea Flower Show for three decades.
