The freestanding 1830s Darlinghurst stone cottage of the late arts patron Jane Macgowan has come on the market.

The Retreat is scheduled for February 18 auction.

The murals on the wall of Carlingford Terrace, in Surry Hills, are believed to have been done by artist Patrick Hockey.

It was bought by Macgowan in 1984 for $145,000.

Macgowan, who died last year, aged 86, was the daughter of diplomat and politician Lord (Baron) Richard Casey, who was the 16th Governor-General of Australia.

Her mother, Lady Ethel Casey was an artist and arts patron.

Set on a 228 square metre holding, the three-bedroom cottage has a separate library and living areas that flank a central courtyard.

Raine & Horne Double Bay is hoping for $2.35 million for 5 Darley Place.
