Urban's three favourite things about Nightingale Anstey:

  • The sustainability of the development and affordability.
  • Spacious apartments with a large communal aspect to the design and delivery.
  • Community feel and rooftop garden to grow vegetables and promote self-sustenance.

Nightingale Housing is a triple bottom line housing model, creating homes that are environmentally, socially and financially sustainable, seeking to provide quality urban housing, sold at a cost.

With the Anstey Train Station directly bounding the west, the new park on West Street two blocks to the south and Sydney Road to the east, Nightingale Anstey is ideally positioned to support an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Located in the North of Melbourne, the 8 storey multi-residential building is broken up into two communities, delivered by Breathe Architecture. A Laneway community housing 31 apartments and a Station community, housing 23 with configurations up to 3 bedrooms.

Each have a dedicated rooftop space with laundry facilities and productive gardens, and share communal bike storage and waste rooms.

The ground floor level, with its public covered colonnade adjacent to the Upfield bike path, and a laneway to the south, hosts a number of retail and commercial spaces with enhanced street activation.

A simple palette of robust materials punctuated with crevices of mature trees and greenery, results in a building which is reflective of its context and surrounds, yet recessive in its form giving way to long term public green amenity.

The architectural form of Nightingale Anstey is driven heavily by its response to context with the mass of the site being visually reduced by the inclusion of large trees and greenery in the facade’s crevices. The long term green amenity is not only offered to the residents of the building, but as equally as important to the public and neighbouring residents.

The landscape design of Nightingale Anstey seeks to supercharge the character of the building by seeing sections of both the roof and facade as a single and immersive landscape populated with plants, designed by Openwork.

Via a covered colonnade activated by retail and adorned with vegetation, residents reach a lush and vegetated forecourt. Passing through mature trees and a fernery, this is the front door of their community. There are moments here of connection and interaction; with neighbours, members of the immediate Nightingale community and the broader public.

The Communal Roof Deck at Levels 7 and 8 features a variety of shared spaces for social activities. Multiple seating areas, a communal induction barbeque, bathhouse, shed, laundry room and clotheslines are located under a canopy of solar panels. An immersive landscape wraps the perimeter of the deck with a section dedicated to productive and sustainable garden plots.
