Arup

We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.

Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. We shape a better world.

Founded in 1946 with an initial focus on structural engineering, Arup first came to the world’s attention with the structural design of the Sydney Opera House, followed by its work on the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arup has since grown into a truly multidisciplinary organisation. Most recently, its work for the Singapore Sports Hub has reaffirmed its reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable designs that reinvent the built environment.

Arup brings together broad-minded individuals from a wide range of disciplines and encourages them to look beyond the constraints of their own specialisms.

This unconventional approach to design springs in part from Arup’s ownership structure. The firm is owned in trust on behalf of its staff. The result is an independence of spirit that is reflected in the firm’s work, and in its dedicated pursuit of technical excellence.

Our current projects in Melbourne are:

888 Collins Street: Arup is currently working with Lend Lease Residential Development on the two residential towers at the 888 Collins Street site.  We are offering building services, facades and ESD design advice for what is going to be the tallest building in Victoria Harbour.  The development includes two residential towers, the first a 15 storey tower at the location where Collins and Bourke Street meet, the second building is a 40 storey tower, including an 8 level podium car park.

The schemes design has been developed in collaboration with Woods Bagot Architects and Lend Lease Design. The development offers resident facilities including a gym, pool, library and extensive podium roof gardens and social spaces. The ESD design for the development has been developed to meet a 5 Star Green Star rating and includes innovative low energy lighting design and energy efficient control of the environment in circulation spaces. Initial modelling results indicate an average NATHERS rating of 7 stars across all the apartments, a 1 star improvement over code minimum.

As part of our building services offering we developed an engineered solution for car park ventilation across the 8 level, 400+ car park. Through detailed CFD analysis, our team was able to engineer a fully naturally ventilated solution that removed the need for over $1m of mechanical exhaust equipment that would have been required to service the car park under a traditional building code design methodology. This solution also provided additional parking spaces through space saving, lower long term running costs, improved NABER rating and less on-going maintenance.

97 Franklin Street: Innovation and close collaboration is needed to manage the necessary large complex transfer structures, dynamic movements, redundancies due to fire, thermal comfort, stair pressurisations, noise and vibration, in order to commercially deliver the apartments and provide a high quality hotel style experience.

Our specialists are currently investigating technologies such as the use of braced viscous dampers developed by Arup in New York in lieu of typical dampening systems, which will optimise the structure and reduce the cost of the building.

The proposal is mixed use, the main tower incorporates a mix of residential and serviced apartments with amenity and recreational levels. The podium houses the residential carpark, fronted on Franklin Street with serviced apartments. Retail and Commercial spaces are incorporated within the first three floors of to create street level activation.

Significant challenges are associated with a tall slender design, cantilevers, and a mixed use development. Innovation and collaboration is needed in order to deal with the necessary large complex transfer structures, dynamic movements, redundancies due to fire, thermal comfort, stair pressurisations, noise and vibration, in order to commercially deliver the apartments and provide a high quality hotel style experience. Arup is bringing global thinking and new technologies to deliver this project which will result in significant cost savings and achieve the design aspirations.

Bouverie Street Apartments: Located on the former Carlton United Brewery site, this multi-level residential tower developed by Grocon and designed by studio505 will offer 218 residential units over 20 floors, 3 boutique retail outlets and a green roof dedicated to residents. The structural design of the apartment development has been optimised by bringing together Arup’s regional experience in combination with industry-leading software and Arup’s latest internally developed analysis and documentation links.

This process has ensured that an optimised design can be incorporated alongside the desired outcomes of maximised material reductions, offsite prefabrication and clear site programming.
