End of an era with mounting speculation MEL-LHR is finally getting the axe.

I've been predicting this since around 2008 - surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Virgin Australia to fly Melbourne-Hong Kong from July

Virgin Australia will begin direct flights between Melbourne and Hong Kong on July 5, going up against incumbents Qantas and Cathay Pacific as the challenger spreads its international wings.

The flights will run five days a week – on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday – and adopt an unusual split schedule with some flights leaving Melbourne mid-morning and others shortly after midnight.

The return flights will all be overnights, departing Hong Kong shortly before 8pm to reach Melbourne at 7.20am the following day.

Ethiad withdrawing the A380 from MEL from the end of October.

Big shake-up of the Melbourne-London route announced.

QF dropping MEL-DXB-LHR in favor of MEL-PER-LHR on the 787 (as widely predicted).

EK to replace QF on MEL-DXB resulting in all three EK flights to MEL being A380 operated.

New airline for Melb

SriLankan Airlines to launch Colombo-Melbourne flights this year

SriLankan Airlines will begin flying between Melbourne and Colombo towards the end of this year, marking the airline's long-awaited return to Australian skies.

A spokesperson for the Sri Lankan flag-carrier – which many years ago abandoned flights to both Sydney and Melbourne – indicated to Australian Business Traveller that the schedule would see four flights each week, using an Airbus A330 jet fitted with lie-flat business class seats to make the 11 hour journey.

This will be the only direct route from Australia to Sri Lanka – most travellers to the tiny island off the southern tip of India transit via Singapore, with onwards flights provided by SriLankan and Singapore Airlines.

Air Canada plans year-round Melbourne-Vancouver flights

Star Alliance member Air Canada will launch year-round Melbourne-Vancouver flights in June 2018 using its Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The airline had already planned seasonal Melbourne-Vancouver flights between December 4 2017 and February 4 2018, with its mid-year return bringing three flights per week in each direction.

Also note: Mel Air are currently doing various studies to inform their Master Plan refresh (due at the end of the year) plus suspect any business case work for the MARL will be incorporated as well.
