Old and new names for suburbs

Liardet's Beach   ►   Sandridge   ►   Port Melbourne

Emerald Hill   ►   South Melbourne

Newtown   ►   Fitzroy

Hotham   ►   North Melbourne

Rosstown   ►   Carnegie

Greenwich   ►   Newport

Anderson's Creek   ►   Warrandyte

Keelbundoora   ►   Greensborough

West Lilydale   ►   Chirnside Park

Clayton South   ►   Clarinda

Box Hill North   ►   Mont Albert (part)

Chadstone   ►    East Malvern (part)

Richmond (part)   ►   Cremorne

Euro-Yroke   ►   St Kilda

Farnham   ►   St Kilda

Sandridge, Hotham and Emerald Hill all changed because they wanted to have Melbourne in their name to cash in on Melbourne's worldwide fame in the second half of the 19th century.

I think that it's time to change them back to their previous and I would say more appropriate names. enlightened

Previous names for Melbourne

Bearbrass

Birr-arrung

Bararing

Bareheap

Bareport

Barrern

Batmania

Doutta Galla

Dutti-Galla

Glenelg

Phillip

I like Melbourne as a name, but if we were to change it, Batmania would be the one that would do it for me. Imagine the field day that tourist authorities in Victoria would have with a name like that. The Flying Fox we often treat like a pest could become Batmania's symbol and a deal with D.C Comics can be struck to use Batman in Batmania's promotions, etc....

Just kidding about the last suggestion. wink

Where would the boy wonder 'Robin' fit in?

Robin already has Robinvale on the southern bank of the Murray River in northern Victoria! wink

I think that Braybrook Junction is a better name than the current Sunshine for instance.

Anything to change that name to re-invigorate it would be good.

Very true. Unfortunately I would imagine that it wouldn't be very easy to change it back now. Personally, I would like the suburbs such as Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and North Melbourne to be changed back to their original names. I believe they were changed to help promote Melbourne's name? Correct me if I am wrong on that one..

The second last line of my first post reads:

Sandridge, Hotham and Emerald Hill all changed because they wanted to have Melbourne in their name to cash in on Melbourne's worldwide fame in the second half of the 19th century.

Simply put, the Melbourne brand opened doors, so they stuck Melbourne in their name.

I hate names such as East Richmond, West Richmond etc. why not just use those names instead. That'd be great.

There is a push to rename East Richmond Station to Cremorne:

I think thats a good suggestion - is much more reflective of its location. And there are too many stations with Richmond in their name anyway. its too confusing - especially when West Richmond is not even west but North!

I noticed the Libs are planning to rename Southern Cross Station back to Spencer St:

This would be a massive cost - surely this money would be better spent on building the Melbourne Metro.... but I digress. :)

In keeping with the rest of this thread, if they were to change it (again), should it technically be called Docklands or even New Quay?
