Landmark for sale
It may be the end for one of Punt Road's unique landmarks - also the scene of what became known as the "Vampire Murder". The octagonal Hotel Saville of South Yarra and a neighbouring car park are expected to sell to developers for $7 million.
Colliers International's Ben Baines and Ted Dwyer say the hotel is being offered with a short-term lease, allowing time for a new owner to push through a planning proposal while still deriving an income. The sites may also attract interest from another hotel operator or investor keen to keep the existing use. The 34-room hotel is not protected by a heritage overlay.
The Saville covers two sites at 1-5 Commercial Road and a car park at 270 Punt Road which is being offered separately.

That proposal is just far too tall for that site. It does not fit in with the surrounding neighbourhood. Something at 5 max levels would be appropriate. The service station site on the other hand, could go a little taller, but there is a PAO on part of it.

South Yarra boom
Four months after Planning Minister Matthew Guy approved a 29-level apartment project for a site next door, the private investor owner of a massive South Yarra block at 671 Chapel Street is cashing in.
With a low-rise showroom, occupied by clothes retailer Ojay, the property is expected to sell for about $30 million and make way for a major apartment tower in the medium term.
In February, Mr Guy approved a 261-unit tower at 661 Chapel Street, citing a taller building recently completed across the road. A 38-level building has also been proposed at the north-west corner of Toorak Road and Chapel Street while several developers have successfully pushed for buildings of 30 levels-plus closer to the South Yarra train station - all in the immediate vicinity of the Ojay site.
CBRE's Mark Wizel and Josh Rutman are the marketing agents in conjunction with Gross Waddell's Michael Gross and Raoul Salter.

THE Hotel Saville site in Melbourne’s South Yarra has been sold for more than $7m, with speculation that Channel Nine’s The Block is the buyer.

The residential development site would be the biggest purchase yet for the television show, although it has not yet been confirmed that the network was the buyer.

Hotel Saville was built in the early 1970s and is a 3.5 star motel facility with 35 rooms.

The adjacent car park was also sold. Colliers International’s Ben Baines said that local developers were dominant in Melbourne’s suburban sites.

“It was a very rare opportunity to acquire a landmark property offering such substantial upside potential. Due to the under-utilised nature of the two sites, both properties offered potential for refurbishment or redevelopment,” Mr Baines said.

Looks interesting, not a massive fan of the concrete 'fins' and I think it'd look nice if they didn't overhang as much but hey, interesting,

Chapel Street reaches for new heights under City of Stonnington planning amendment

A controversial plan to lock in a series of new building height limits for Chapel Street and its environs has been adopted by the City of Stonnington.

Dubbed Chapel reVision, it resurrects a planning document first devised in 2007. It breaks the Chapel Street area into 10 precincts from Forrest Hill in the north down through the Jam Factory and Prahran Market areas in the centre, to Windsor Village.

But the focus of development is not on the built form of Chapel Street and its iconic historic architecture, but in the side streets and blocks that feed into it.

The new plan allows 76-metre high-rise buildings in the former industrial area of Forrest Hill, where a string of towers has already been built; and medium-rise buildings of staggered height limits further down the street until it ends at Brighton Road.
