Melbourne Terrace Apartments
Corner Franklin and Queen Streets
1994 Katsalidis Architects
The Melbourne Terrace Apartments are the city’s answer to the Roman palazzine of the 1950s, the speculative apartments which explored exuberant decorative and formal potentials available to an urban façade. Nonda Katsalidis has here enriched his facades with copper oxide-etched balcony slabs, weathered metal, mannered window surrounds, glass blocks, serrated edges to brutish off-form concrete and a skyline that verges on a description such as post-apocalyptic Baroque. At the entry to each lift and stair lobby, copper doors and figurative sculptures by Peter Corlett announce the four buildings: Equus, Mondo, Roma and Fortuna. With this exciting urban hulk, Katsalidis offers the vibrancy of mixed use and a taste of decorative excess.
