While most of us are moaning about the spate of near-incessant rain due to last in Melbourne until Monday, one man, at least, is rubbing his hands with glee.

"I'm just really hoping this lasts," says Robin Fox as it drizzles down on his Sky Light project on the banks of the Yarra River. "It's going to make the lasers look so much better."

On Thursday night, Fox turned on the 15 lasers in jewel tones of blue, green and purple that will emanate from the top of the IBM tower on Southbank and extend to various points located on buildings on the other side of the Yarra.

The rain has the effect of dappling the lasers, making them appear to sparkle, and the water on the lenses washes out the lasers at their point of contact, like food dye dissolving in water.

Sky Light is the keynote project for the 2016 Melbourne Fringe Festival, kicking off the two-week festival from Thursday until this Sunday evening when the lasers will slice through the night sky from dusk until 11pm.
