This building is considered one of the landmarks of early Modernism in the city; the strong horizontal lines, curved edges, glossy black ‘vitrolite’ tiles, and large areas of glass (particularly for the ground floor showrooms) are hallmarks of this influence. Designed by noted Modernist Stuart Calder with Reid & Pearson, it stood in stark contrast to the traditional masdonry structures around it when completed in 1936.
