Former Martin & Pleasance Building

176-180 Collins Street

This highly modeled façade of layered pilasters and mouldings, enriched with a lively parapet and coloured tiles, is typical of the work of F M White. It was built in 1889 as offices and the main dispensary of Martin & Pleasence, Melbourne’s leading purveyor of homeopathic medicines, a popular 19th century curative.

Below, an Edwardian postcard featuring the building (right), and after that, two photographs of my own.

This building is so easily missed by most.

One just has to stop and smell the roses to spot buildings like this. enlightened
