Wardle & Grimshaw for mine. Best all round proposal (IMO) although I do love the interior of the Herzog & De Meuron and Hassell scheme as well.

The Hadid + BVN scheme looks like something out of a sci-fi flick which I also enjoy.

I really liked the Herzog & De Mauron, Hassell scheme the best. Particularly the arches and the ampitheatre. Wardle & Grimshaw was good as well, liked the northbank treatment with the brick and the little nooks for cafes and stalls. Very Melbourne. Also, really good addition by ARM with the Flinders Street High School, there will certainly be a need for some schools (primary, secondary in particular) in the CBD in the coming years one would think.

right, finally got them all.

Initial thoughts (probably do a series of articles/blog posts on them too - anyone want to help out - send me a PM):

Hadid/BVN - interesting, a little too commercial. Love the idea of a new Queensbridge and realigning that horrible traffic corner and moving trams out of Market Street - a very big plus IMO. Love the eastern entrance, airline terminal-ish, but eh, it could be built anywhere... guess thats the problem with Starchitects.

ARM - love moving Swanston St trams stop to the curb and retaining the exiting frame holding currently eastern end up (albeit it will go glass). I think they do a better job of integrating uses - Hadid/BVN have too much shopping centre / office focus IMO. They'd need to re think the towers toward the western end. Loving the Victorian Era train hall effect at eastern end (which also reflects original design).

HASSELL + Herzog - anything which reflects the Victorian-era train halls gets high points from me. The Plaza + amphitheatre + river stage concept is best treatment out of all of them I reckon (althought overal Grimshaw+Wardle do an overall better entire river frontage job). Initially liked and then started questioning the form - does it need to be broken up?

NH - love the idea of the new pedestrian bridge over the Yarra, especially now Hamer Hall is better connected to St Kilda Road, you have a clear cut pathway from St. Kilda Road to Elizabeth Street. I actually really -dont- like the idea of keeping the heritage canopies - retaining the baroque building is more than enough, I really want to see something new over that part of the site. Building over the Vaults obviously needs work.

Velasquez + Pineda + Medina - I like the rolling hill concept across the top of the site, and it's a superb Swanston Street treatment: the street itself becomes a stage with amphitheatres on both sides - the western end is problematic however. Kudos for the capopy next to the original building for onsite energy generation.

Grimshaw + Wardle - love the elizabeth street tram terminus treatment, western end like V+P+M is problematic, I think they did the open-air platforms much better than NH (however looks to be a lack of shelter for what is busiest station) - and they probably have the best integration with the river, focus on small spaces and use of brick gets a lot of marks from me.

STill really analysing, have no real favourite but weakest at this point is NH.

Laury's point on Hadid/BVN being very sci-fi I like too hahah. Reminds me of Lyon Airport's TGV station by Calatrava

So frustrated, as I cant download 1 GB at work!

From the limited pics I can see, I do love the VPM one - the rooftop hills concept is very novel!

Cant wait to get home and have a more detailed look. Come to think of it, i feel kinda ill, might have to go home now... :)

The more I look at it, the more the H&dM + Hassell entry grows on me.

Now I saw the video for the H+DM I do like the scheme, but the roof is just too expensive to justify building IMHO.

There's something in each design I like.

Now that I have downloaded it all, I'm sticking with my original assessment and going with V+P+M.

The rooftop open space looks amazing and the wide open throughfares make a great compliment to Birramung Marr across the road.

The glass cage makes for a large, bright feel whilst still protecting from the elements in the Winter. The wide ramps down to the platforms and up to the greenery make for a grand entrance.

Interesting tram stop proposal. Not only has the stop been moved to Princes Bridge, but the pics seem to suggest that cars have been banished from the bridge and up to the Flinders/Swanston intersection?

Students won the people's choice

Hassell + Herzog got the jury vote.

Happy with the result. The People's Choice is exactly what I expected though as I thought the majority of the general public would associate park with being respectful of the heritage fabric while ignoring practicality of navigating the various transitions in level and of course maintenance.

Hassell + Herzog's winning entry.

Let's hope we see some funding for this sometime soon.
