Leighton looks to hook Jemena on Collins Street

Leighton Properties is hoping to secure utilities company Jemena for a healthy lease of more than 14,000 square-metres in the new premium office tower it is developing at Collins Street’s revitalised western end.

If completed as planned, the lease agreement will be the biggest ­occupancy deal in the Melbourne market this year, eclipsing Australia Post’s impending move into the former BHP Billiton headquarters on Lonsdale Street.

The mooted move will vindicate many in the market who have remained confident that Melbourne’s diverse mix of business tenants will put a floor under the leasing market.

The first evidence of that came last month when figures showed Melbourne was just one of two markets to experience less vacancy. It is now at 8.7 per cent.

Leighton’s team is now wrestling with Jemena over finer details on the lease deal, according to a number of market sources.

The infrastructure player, which controls power, gas and water assets, has a tenancy in Mount Waverley that expires next year.

The Leighton project, at 567 Collins Street, will be completed by the middle of next year
