Yes, big money ... and far from restoring the heritage buildings and unique historic lane ways on the site, the word on the street is that they plan to demolish the lot (well, perhaps minus a corner section of the currently intact terrace shops facing Therry St).

Yes Peter 'can', unfortunately they have no policies in place to actually do such a thing, lets hope that changes though!

The laneways on the Munro site will be retained and the the existing laneway
between 104-106 and 108 Franklin Street will be extended through to Therry Street and activated.

the Mercat Cross Hotel on the corner will be retained and the other buildings on the site are pretty ordinary interwar buildings that were cheaply repaired after a fire in 1945.

Who cares if the lane ways are retained if the heritage buildings along them are gone?

And re: Mercat Cross - it will be retained, but it forms only a small piece of an intact row of terrace shops. There is nothing special about it as a stand alone corner - it is part of a row. It wasn't even built as a hotel originally - why demolish an intact historic street frontage and then justify by retaining a piece on the corner? That is just heritage fetishism without any sense of history or respect for the precinct as a whole.

"The changing face of Melbourne"
That blank wall is an accurate depiction of that statement.

ah yes, the blank wall. The official Melbourne symbol of cheap developments and boring architects alike.

Western elevation being the one thats actually visible to the public realm and major intersections.
blank walls like this are almost like an insult to the heritage buildings next door, as if to say 'they'll be demolished or facaded soon' (though yes I'm aware it's a mandatory thing on site boundaries for good reason'.

should be some kind of mandatory public art/design on blank walls like this, unless they can prove to be sufficiently architecturally important, like on a brutalist building.
