Avalon Airport

Avalon Airport

Avalon Airport is the second busiest of the four airports serving Melbourne (in passenger traffic) and is located in Avalon, Victoria, Australia, 50 km to the south-west of the state capital Melbourne and 15 km north-east of the city of Geelong. The airport is operated by Avalon Airport Australia Pty Ltd (AAA), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fox Group Holdings Pty Ltd and is situated on a 1,753 hectare site, 40 minutes drive from Melbourne’s Central Business District and 20 minutes from Geelong.

The airport's location between Melbourne and Geelong makes it both a capital city airport and a regional airport, servicing a large regional catchment in western Victoria and providing connections to tourism destinations such as the Great Ocean Road. Since Linfox Group’s purchase of the airport in 1997, Avalon Airport’s aviation operations have grown significantly as it has established itself as a second gateway to the Melbourne and Geelong regions. Today, the airport contains land and facilities that are surplus to current and projected aviation requirements. This provides the opportunity to pursue property development projects for a wider range of activities, which support Avalon Airport’s growth as an airport and as a major employment centre for the region. The business has an established a vision for Avalon Airport: “to be a World Class Centre of Aviation Excellence”, achieved via four pillars of activities: passenger operations, technical aviation operations, freight operations and retail and commercial developments.

Jobs And Tourism Take Off From Avalon Airport

Monday 26 October 2015

The Andrews Labor Government has welcomed Jetstar’s inaugural flight from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast, less than six months after securing the airport’s future for at least 10 years.

Minister for Industry, Lily D’Ambrosio, and Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren, visited Avalon Airport today to launch the first new daily flight, which will help boost tourism and jobs in the region.

The daily Avalon-Gold Coast service is the result of an agreement signed between the Labor Government and Jetstar earlier this year that secures operations at Avalon Airport for the next ten years, expands passenger services and saves up to 200 jobs.

One-third of all arrivals in to Avalon are tourists and the new daily flights are expected to carry an additional 65,000 passengers a year arriving at Avalon Airport from Gold Coast.

The new flights will increase the airport’s capacity by 65,000 seats per year, providing another option for inbound visitors from South East Queensland, particularly those looking to explore the Geelong region and the Great Ocean Road.

Wasn't there meant to be another destination announced too?

I thought that the deal included a commitment by JQ to maintain SYD flights and start up 2 other destinations, for with OOL was one.

Best of luck to JQ and AVV on this one. It would be great if Geelong and Western Victoria could support the flights to make it work.

Victoria Lands Second International Airport

4 February 2018

Victoria will be home to a second, curfew free international Airport – creating more than 200 jobs, growing our international exports and boosting the visitor economy thanks to support from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll joined Minister for Tourism and Member for Lara John Eren to announce Air Asia will fly twice daily between Avalon and Kuala Lumpur, with flights expected by the end of 2018.

The game-changing project will see up to 220,000 international passengers land in Avalon each year, opening up Geelong and the Great Ocean Road to even more international visitors.

Construction of the terminal will create an additional 33 jobs and once complete, it will be capable of exporting 14 tonnes of Victorian fresh produce every day – cementing Victoria’s position as the nation’s food & fibre export hub.

This project will have significant economic and social benefits for regional Victoria through increased tourism, new employment opportunities, and improved access to international flights.

The Labor Government has been steadfast in its support for Avalon – helping secure Jetstar’s future at the airport and investing $1.5 million in infrastructure works at the new industrial precinct, which will eventually be home to 750 new jobs, including Cotton On Group’s purpose-built distribution centre.
