Vegetarian favourite in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, The Bear Café, is closing up shop – but just for renovations.

At 439 Brunswick Street, they initially started with VIP coffee deliveries in late-2012 to Fitzroy, before expanding and including retail with food and coffee, and specialised groceries.

The café has been a more recent staple at the same address of "Animal Lovers by Neo Tokyo's" retail store, which has operated since 1998. Their focus is on gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives, but they do also provide dairy options.

It seems there was some online speculation that they are closing up for good, with outraged online comments lamenting and calling the believed closure ‘sad,’ despite no official word out from the owners themselves.

However, vegetarians and Brunswick Street lovers can breathe a sigh of relief – it’s just believed to be a temporary closure as the owners carry out renovations.

A sign out front says 'The Bear is hibernating', however Property Observer understands that it will be back up and running in three to four weeks.

The Bear Cafe Facebook page has been silent since January, however they had been open and busy until earlier this month.
