The Coles merchandise director John Durkan and his wife Bernadette have bought Greystones, the 1914 Brighton house.

It was bought from the shoulder and elbow orthopaedic surgeon Simon Bell and his wife Jennifer Coghlan-Bell.

Listed with a price guide of $7.3 million plus, it is understood Kay & Burton agents Ian Jackson and Stewart Lopez secured around $7.5 million for the Park Street offering.

Set amid established English gardens, the 1914 six-bedroom, five-bathroom house sits on 2,219 square metres.

It has been home to the Bells for the past 20 years.

The house comes with a large cellar, sauna, studio with a gymnasium and a rooftop retreat that offers views across the bay to the city skyline.

John Durkan was at Safeway before the British shopping industry expert was recruited to Coles by Coles's chief executive, Ian McLeod.
