Port Melbourne's former Circus Oz site has reputedly been sold for $4.95 million.

The 40 Bay Street site became its Port Melbourne headquarters about 20 years ago.

The site features the 1912 Port Melbourne Naval Drill Hall, one of the first major buildings constructed for the newly formed Royal Australian Navy, which adjoins the former 1862 Sandridge Post Office.

The heritage report says the naval drill hall is a fine example of Edwardian Free Classical architecture distinguished by an assured handling of massing and materials using rough stone plinths, shaped and plain red bricks, and dressed sandstone in the English Arts and Crafts tradition.

The circus relocated to a Skills Victoria site at 35 Johnston Street, Collingwood.
