NAME: Tom Jordan

POSITION: Managing director

COMPANY: Hayball (architecture, interior design, urban design)

OFFICE LOCATION: Melbourne, Sydney

  • How long have you been in the industry?

30 years.

  • What’s happening in the area you specialise in?

As a design director I’m involved in the multi-residential sector, with projects in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. There’s a significant re-emergence here of owner/occupier demand for larger apartments, primarily local buyers but also offshore.

  • Describe the most interesting commercial property you have worked on?

Trillium Residents Club, which is more than just a building. With leisure facilities for residents in a new suburb north of Melbourne, the club is contributing to a new community as it takes shape. The design program was diverse, and as a project it has a very strong yet elegant architectural response that we held a strong vision for, and we survived a demanding process to see it get through.

  • What are the ingredients to being successful in your job?

Having the best people possible you can get around you.

  • What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?

The combination of projects being realised, and seeing the practice flourish.

  • Where would you invest a spare $750,000?

I’d be looking at commercial and residential property.

  • Which football team do you support?

Geelong

  • What’s your favourite app or techno gadget?

At work, I’m never far from Nearmap [geospatial map technology]. Away from the practice, it’s Navionics, for electronic nautical charting.

  • How do you use social media?

I am increasingly using LinkedIn to stay in touch with business associates. As a company, Hayball maintains a presence on LinkedIn and Twitter. We’re also gaining a strong following on Instagram, which is a platform I’m really enjoying.
