Tenants sometimes prepay rent that some landlords unnecessarily include in their taxable income.

However, Eddie Chung, partner and property tax specialist with accountants BDO in Brisbane, says landlords need not declare the amounts as income in the current financial year if the prepaid amounts are for periods after June 30 – provided the lease requires repayment of prepaid rent if the tenant vacates.
